Downton Abbey Style

I'm currently obsessing (as is everyone else in the world!) about PBS's hit show Downton Abbey. I saw the show snag a few Emmy's at last year's ceremony and then caught the show on Netflix. I finished in about a week. Then I even cheated and watched the whole second season in a weekend over the Christmas holiday.

Of course, the fashion world and the TV world frequently collided. We saw quite a few collections devoted to Gatsby style wears. Though Downton is set in the mid-1910s through the early 1920s, there are some clear nods to the Spring runway in the show's costumes.

Happy New Year everyone! 2011 was a very busy year for me in my school and interning life. I also stopped blogging for half of the year because of my busy life! I had no idea how long it had been until recently!

I don't know how often I'll be blogging in 2012, but I miss it and I'd like to keep it up.

Christmas Wish

I'm backdating this post because it's been waiting to be posted since before the holidays.

It's my wishlist for Christmas! Thankfully, I got my wishes granted!

This J Crew sequined tee was an item I've been coveting for a long time. A chic, sparkly, classic piece is important for any wardrobe.

My glitter obsession has really hit a stride, but after a season of black what could be more fun than some sparkly pumps?

I always need more winter dresses. In the cold months my wardrobe is consumed with wool skirts and warm tights. It's my uniform. This J Crew drop-waist dress was too cute to resist.

I first smelled this fragrance in an issue of Marie Claire. My mom always gets us a perfume for Christmas and I knew I needed it! Of course it was sold out everywhere, but I finally found my very own. I love it. Candy!

One of the editors I worked with got some black velvet slippers as a gift. Since then, I have been looking for a pair of my own. Why not in bright pink?

This J. Crew factory skirt was too bright and sweet to resist! Perfect for the season!

This was a surprise my mom got me. We admired these vintage reissue Fossil bags in the store months before, but I didn't think to ask for one. I love the one she got me. I can't wait to take it to class!

Hot, Hot Summer

Well, I really am crazy. Wearing three-quarter sleeves during the dog days of summer? Hilarious and totally crazy. It's safe to say that I regretted wearing this baseball tee all day long. Lesson learned!

I paired it with my favorite summer skirt. It just seemed like a good match. And it was, but maybe more for an early fall day with temperatures swirling in the 70s or 80s rather than hovering around 98 degrees for most of the daytime hours.

Make no mistake, that smile on my face is the result of pure three-quarter sleeve related desperation. I wanted to take pictures quickly, so I could get back inside into the A/C. Unfortunately, down here in the southwest, summers aren't the ideal time to be outside. Not until about 10PM, that is.

And my dogs. They never leave me alone. And they love being in my pictures.

For this very choppy post: I'm wearing an American Apparel baseball tee, a Gap skirt, and wedges from Payless.

Hope you are staying cool. I'm doing it by steering clear of long sleeve tees until autumn comes along!

I never go online and look at items I can't (by any means) afford. It's absolute torture to do that. I limit myself to salivating over expensive wears at work and on magazine pages. Beyond that I try to stick with sites and items that fit in my budget.

So naturally, when I visited Saks.com to check out which of this season's fantastic Miu Miu's would make it to retail, I had to pick some favorites.

A version of this shoe have been all over the glossies. I particularly love this version. Bows and sequins are irresistible to me.

These are simple, everyday kind of pumps. If you don't mind shiny shoes during the day, that is...

These are Prada and are pretty much the perfect fall shoe. Classic black and a chic touch of leopard. I would wear these out, if I could get my hands on them!

Summer Love: Orange

Summer time is great for so many reasons: the weather, the dresses, the shoes. Come on! Aside from the stifling heat where I live, the getting is generally pretty good in the summer.

My uniform of choice is usually a sundress and wedge sandal combination. Why complicate things with scarfs, jewelry, and belts, when simplicity does the trick?

Sorry for the many pictures, but I love the lighting. And I paid for it because it was over 100 degrees when I was taking these photos.

But down to business: I got this dress at Target for less than $10. Sometimes it amazes me that people can't see the possibility in a simple cut and a fun print. But, then again, how on Earth would we ever score great sales on underdog pieces?

The shoes are from Payless, which I think I scored as a part of their famous BOGO sales. I've never really considered Payless as a shoe option, but I've really liked and enjoyed wearing some of their shoes over the past few years. They wear pretty well!

I had to include this last one as a blooper because I almost fell while trying to take it. I'm surprised I'm still smiling in this photo. But after all it is summer and that's something to smile about.

White Out

I wish I hadn't taken such a long hiatus from blogging. But I'm sure as most bloggers know that once you stop, it's really hard to jump back into it again. Somehow I made my way back, though.

Summer is always the season of white and I've been spotting some excellent white duds lately.

Take Mrs. Obama in white Alexander Wang (a designer I now hold dear to my heart after spending six months working with the American fashion market).

It's really a stunning gown, especially paired with some regal, long gloves. I'm not the First Lady's biggest fan fashion-wise, but I'm not afraid to call out a great ensemble.

After the royal wedding, I was pretty convinced that hats are just about the worst accessory in existence. Then I saw the new Duchess of Cambridge sporting a fantastic tan, beret-style hat by Phillip Treacy. Chic! Paired with a beautiful Reiss dress and jacket by Nessie. UK fashion brands are definitely starting to peak my interest.

I have a HUGE girl crush on J.Lo. I think she is the bees-knees. It's white. It's Monroe-esque. It's classic with a modern twist. It's a perfect match with the hair and shoes. It's genius.

I'm a firm believer that everyone should rock a white Marilyn Monroe style dress straight out of The Seven Year Itch once in their life.

If only but to spin in it!

Next Move

Hey all,

I must report that I've just finished up my first internship. It ended on Thursday! It went by in the blink of an eye. I'm so lucky and grateful to my bosses and all the lovely ladies that I met while at the magazine.

Though sometimes it was extremely stressful, I really did enjoy my time there. The work was great and mostly fun and fashion related, but the female comradery and friendships were a pleasant surprise. It was also a hugely helpful networking opportunity.

Which leads to my next announcement: I've been hired again! (Literally happened yesterday!)

This next internship will be along the same lines of my last one. It's even in the same building! I basically got the gig because of help from my bosses at my other internship. I'm a lucky girl!

I'm looking forward to starting my new internship in the fall. My new bosses seem so great, so I'm very excited. Though I'm really going to miss my last internship, this one is another incredible opportunity!

As I've said before, out of professionalism and respect for my employers (past, present, and future) I won't be revealing any specifics or the name of either magazine. But trust me, the mags are the best in the business.

And prayin' for some spring weather. If you live in the northeast, you know it's not warming up here, yet. I guess we didn't get the 60 degree plus memo.

I'm waiting here with baited breath. Not to jinx the process, but I bought a new summer dress (or three... but who's counting?) and, though I don't even have great shoes to wear it with, I decided to play dress up. Ultimately, it was super cute and ended up being a huge disappointment because I can't wear it anytime soon...

Well, I guess I can't wear it outside anytime soon, but I can wear it inside anytime I like. Right? I'll just have to settle for that for now. How sad is that?!

The dress is (GASP!) Hollister, worn with a very old bow belt, and UO t-strap heels.

Summer/Spring, I will be ready for you when you get here! So get here!

Spring Boots

I have big plans for these boots that I just bought on super sale at Stevemadden.com.

They are going to be my spring boots. Yeah, spring boots for the spring! These will be worn with little dresses, bare legs, and cuffed socks, so expect to see me try this out whenever the winter decided to let up. (If that EVER happens.)

I can't wait to debut these in a full outfit! They are smashing all on their own and paired correctly they will be even better.

I'm so impressed by Miuccia Prada every single season (Okay, I won't lie. I wasn't impressed last season, but it was totally an exception!). The Prada show just happened and she's done it again. Absolutely fabulous, Miuccia!

A perfect little white dress. And what is going on with those shoes? Love them! Such a fresh idea.

And the collection takes a 180* turn to burgundy and luxe fur.

It was especially fun for me because I got the daily round-up of how our editors felt about each show. It's been so thrilling to have the inside scoop on NYFW. Even better, I definitely chose many of the same looks as my favorites as my bosses did.

It's that time again everyone! Fashion week is upon us. I wish I could report that I was going to a show or working one, but sadly all I've done is helped our editor's prep for the shows... And they do get invited to the most fantastic shows!

Working Girl

So you got it from the title, I wore this little ensemble to work. And oddly nothing makes you more aware of just how "little" your ensemble is than going to work in it.

Blouse from Gap, vintage belt, skirt from Gap, tights from Target, booties from Vince Camuto.

I've always embraced short hemlines (what else is a short girl to do?), but admittedly this is pretty short. I'm certainly more aware of mini-length skirts and dresses now. Especially when I'm bending over a copy machine and running around the office. It's definitely something to watch out for in the future, but overall I still think this outfit is pretty cute.

But I'll be honest, I only wore it because I have been dying to wear my new wedge booties. They are so versatile, that I think they would look great with just about anything. (I intend to test out this theory, too. Pajamas and wedge booties, jeggings with wedge booties, dresses with wedge booties, sweatpants with wedge booties... The list goes on and on!)

Luckily, because I'm indoors almost all day, I can pretty much wear what I like. That doesn't mean wearing what I like is always the smartest idea. I still carry flats in my bag and run (while cursing the cold) all the way from my transportation to my office building.

What can I say? It's part of my very glamorous life as an intern!

Pattern Play

In my blogging life I have seen quite a few blogs attempt to explain mixing patterns. I've also seen magazines attempt to do so. I'll be honest and say that I haven't really seen any examples work really well. (Sometimes the mixes just look crazy and outlandish to me, but that's me...) Maybe my style is too subtle or pattern mixing is a more of a personal preference kind of thing.

Fortunately, I will say that I've mixed patterns successfully twice this week and I think I've found some great ways to mix prints.

This is one I should have thought of at least once because I've worn this jacket approximately 1642 times (approximately...) but it just keeps finding ways to surprise me.

The print on the jacket is so subtle, but it is still somewhat noticeable up close. I think this pairing is really cute and I may not have attempted it, if this jacket wasn't such a wardrobe staple. The two navy colors play off of each other really well here.

This idea I stole from my very stylish boss. She wore something similar at our interview and I think it's genius. Lace is totally a pattern! I hadn't thought of it, but lace can actually be pretty hard to coordinate with other items.

It turns out all you need to do is add some leopard! I just love this mix. It's dead on!

A few updates for y'all:

I've been working on a new header. This is what I've made so far:

I think it's a little too much of me. I know that you have to be somewhat of a narcissist to even take a picture of yourself and blog about it, but I'd be embarrassed if my header screamed, "NARCISSIST!" It's a work in progress.

Additionally, a few months ago I interviewed and got a position at one of my favorite, favorite publications (EVER) and two days ago I started work at this truly fantastic fashion magazine. I was going to mention it earlier, but I wanted to be sure of the rules on this sort of thing. I signed a confidentiality agreement today actually saying what I can say, ie. the magazine's name and vague things like that, as long as all of the contents (cover stars, interviews, spreads) are top secret, which they definitely will be.

Out of sheer professionalism, I won't disclose a name or any specifics aforementioned or otherwise about the magazine. However, I wanted to let you all know that I am working in fashion(!) Thankfully, working at this magazine in my two days experience has been an absolute delight so far, but OH BOY my feet hurt! (Acceptable details to disclose, I think.)

Should you have any questions about how to get an internship or questions about interviews, though I have limited experience, I would be happy to answer you via the comments or in an email. I know I was a little lost at the beginning of my search, too. I'll also say that The Teen Vogue Handbook (I had mine signed by Amy Astley) is an invaluable resource, as is the website ed2010.com.

That's all, folks! Gee, I know that I'm going to be so exhausted this semester! I can't wait!

Faux to Go

My love for Ebay is sort of an on/off thing. Sometimes I totally ignore it, sometimes I am obsessed, and sometimes we're together, but just casually.

But lately things have been on. Very on. Because I have been in hot pursuit of a faux fur scarf and, more recently, a vintage mink collar to attach to sweaters and coats. I've got the goods and I'm patiently waiting for them in the mail. My luck has lead me to wonder, how often to you find exactly what you want on ebay?! (Okay, I confess, I lose auctions all the time! I forget that I've placed a bid on something and log on later to find out that I've lost. I don't get what I want pretty often. So you might win auctions, but I feel lucky whenever I win one.)

Putting it Together

I've been loafing around the house pretty much everyday since I've been on break. So except for a few lunches, appointments, and shopping trips, I haven't really had a chance to wear the clothes and shoes I got for Christmas.

I do, however, dress up everyday for school and I've been trying to brainstorm how to put everything together. There's a myriad of options, of course, so I made a little collage on Polyvore with a few of them items I received. It was nice just to see things laid out so perfectly--cardigans (my outfits usually revolve around a warm cardigan) with skirts and shoes. I think everything is pretty versatile and seeing it this way gives me tons of ideas.

I can't wait to put it all together!

New Year, New Shoes

I wanted to share my new shoes!

I got two new pairs as gifts for Christmas and two more on a post NYE sale. I was very relieved and excited to acquire these shoes because every pair has been on my radar and on my mind for quite some time. So nice to cross things off of your wish-list!

The two on the right are both from Urban Outfitters. The wedges, which were on an insane sale, are more summer-appropriate, but I'm hoping socks will make them work for now. If you read SD, you might have seen me post about these the wing-tip pumps a few times. Finally, they belong to me!

The two on the left are my new acquires on a 50% off red tag sale. Jessica Simpson bow, zipper flats and Vince Camuto bootie wedges. Love, love, love these. I was trying to be modest and not spend a ton of money, but the deals were too good to resist!

Our favorite department store gets pretty busy during sales, but this year it was total madness. It was a little annoying, but I was really happy to see people out spending money. There were women buying five boxes of shoes! Surely, a good sign for the economy, if not just for our local economy.

I remember when the recession was in full, terrible swing. My sister, mom, and I were very fortunate to have a little spending money and were able to score some incredible deals on clothing and shoes. I acquired some great stuff, but I'm glad it isn't quite as bad and that things are starting to improve for people. I hope that's more of what 2011 will bring!

Last Christmas

Jeeze, I have been avoiding this blog! I have no idea why, though. I guess I was just enjoying the last days of feeling the holiday spirit. Now the holidays are really, truly over. Isn't it sad?

I am really obsessed with Christmas, so I particularly dislike this time of year. The lights come down, the decorations get put away, and the tree has to go! I hate it. Hate. Hate. Now everyone will be back to work and real life. Boo to that!

Since this time of year is not quite over, I'll relive it one last time. I'm so late with this, but here is what I wore on Christmas Eve.

Sweater from American Eagle, plaid shirt from Chelsea and Violet, skirt from Forever 21, tights from Hue, and shoes from Steve Madden.

I don't usually do colored tights, but I've been trying to branch out. Plus, what is better from Christmas Eve than a cranberry sweater and matching tights? I definitely wanted to wear red and green this year. I was feeling extra festive, I guess.

I didn't go out on New Year's Eve this year. Thank goodness. I didn't go out last year, either. Funny enough, that was the night I gave in and decided to start a blog. I'm so glad I did.

Some great things have happened in 2010. I'm hoping for even more exciting opportunities and adventures in 2011. I hope the same for you!

Navy Blue Christmas

I was feeling pretty blue about the holidays back in NYC, but yesterday I hopped on a plane and landed in sunny NM! I'm so glad to be done with school. One of the best things about college is that once the semester is over, you're free as a bird. Free I am. Free to post outfits I wore weeks ago. Free to be guilt-free about blogging at all.

Outfits, yes. Last week during finals I think I wore variations of the same outfit for seven or eight days. It's definitely time to get back into the swing of things!

Here's something I wore before finals took over my life. I love this dress. White can be so tricky, but the navy stripes make this dress a little easier to work with, especially for winter.

And here's my new(ish) coat. I will never tire of this navy coat. And look at how it gives this outfit a little different spin! It's definitely a good match. I feel like this coat makes every outfit better!

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Who's excited for the holidays?

Me!

Because for most people this time of year is magical... and, of course, it is, but for college students it isn't exactly "the most wonderful time of the year." Finals could kill anyone's Christmas spirit. However, I'm trying to stay in the mood with a little online shopping, (short) holiday movies, and lots of carols.

Speaking of carols...What's your favorite Christmas album?

Now That's What I Call Christmas is definitely a staple of mine, but I also love *NSYNC's Home for Christmas (I'm a child of the 90s). This year A Very Glee Christmas has come into the picture and I love it.

I also have a few more gift ideas for you... But I'll confess, you may like them more than your friends and family. In fact, they may be a few suggestions that you might want to pass on to Santa for yourself. Unless, you have a fashion-obsessed-blogger-friend that might enjoy them, too. But who says you can't be the tiniest bit selfish this holiday season? If you're working half as hard as I will for finals, I say you deserve it!

(Much harder to spot as they are just real people living their lives...) Today I finally saw a legend (in my mind, at least...).

Yup. Hamish Bowles. I almost said, "Hello," but I didn't want to embarrass myself. I'm still gushing with fashion-joy!

Thankful

I have to say that I am thankful for a great many things. Right now, I'm thankful that I just had a week off. Unfortunately, right after a great week off and some time to be thankful, the things I am not thankful for swung right back into full force (jet lag, homework, papers, cyber Monday sales that I cannot afford to participate it, but did...).

But I'll stay positive and show you my Thanksgiving dress that I am very thankful for!

I'm thankful that this dress looks good with navy tights and a black shirt. I'm thankful that it will also look good with cranberry tights and a navy shirt or brown tights and a cranberry shirt. I am thankful that it toes the line between looking pilgrim-ish, but doesn't. I am thankful for this dress.

Blue Suede Shoes

Okay, I'll confess: my kicks are not suede. They are leather AND they are bright blue. It's funny when you get a new item of clothing or shoes and the next outfit you wear simply must revolve around the new piece. Such is the case with these little pumps.

I don't own many electric blue tops, but I'm not always extremely concerned with matching, either. So my thought was to wear this teal top with the bright shoes. They certainly don't match, but I think they go together.

I got a lot of stares at the shoes. I hope it wasn't because they're a little quirky! I think it was mostly because the shoes are pretty bright against dark tights.

(Also, on a side note: I read in a magazine once that men do not notice if women wear heels or flats. I have tested this over many days and I find it to be most untrue! Half the people who check out my heels are usually men! How funny is that?! I wonder if this is true for most women... I bet it is!)

I digress! Have a safe and lovely Thanksgiving! I'll definitely post a few more times soon... We need to catch up!

Uninspired

I've really been slacking on my blogging. I'm feeling really uninspired right now. It' s probably because NY decided to pass on fall and head right into winter this year. And it's been freezing lately, which pretty much means I'm inside or wrapped up in sweaters and scarves. So it's been kinda dull on the fashion and blogging sides of my life.

But shoes. Shoes are never boring. And unless it's snowing or raining you can pretty much wear any pair at anytime. So I'll show you two pairs that I received for my birthday. They're both Olsenboye via JC Penny. (Yes, Olsenboye as in the Olsen twins... Yes, the Olsen twins, designers of The Row and Elisabeth and James.)

These studded black pumps are my favorite! I love a classic black pump with a little twist.

These are funny because they're printed and the heel is pretty low. It almost makes them pass as casual.

I like them tons and they were pretty inexpensive. Always a plus, right?

I'm hoping I'll get inspired again really soon, so we can exchange great outfits and fun posts!

If I were to tackle this one on October 31st, I would rip the tights and add a leopard coat. Some smeary eye make-up wouldn't hurt, either.

Purple Pants

"Are those pants purple?" This is what one of my friends said recently about these pants. Later followed by, "you're a cowgirl in purple pants!" I am.

Sometimes I forget that being into fashion does make you different from most people. Honestly, I only think about this when someone brings it up. But even at a university in New York City, purple pants are not the norm.

But I rationalize my purple pants because being into fashion is not the norm. Neither is getting dressed up for class. So me? I guess I'm not normal. I wasn't normal in high school and I'm still different. Normal is no fun anyway.

I don't mind upping the fashion ante. No one should. We fashion girls are a special kind of crazy. I wear my purple pants and anything else I put on, that someone might comment on, with pride. That's me. I don't know any other way to be!

GLEE

I know that the internet was all abuzz with the Glee cast in GQ Magazine photos. I understand that it's a big deal for parents who have kids that watch the show. I have to say, though, Glee is really, really inappropriate and dark for anyone under 12. (I can't say high school age because I watched the even more inappropriate show "The O.C." at age 12...).

I SO wouldn't have understood this show pre-middle school. Also, GQ isn't appropriate for anyone not in high school, so I'm not sure why that's an issue. I mean all around this is content not approproate for children and I don't think it's meant for a young audience. It's prime time (8 PM) on Tuesday (a school night), shouldn't kids be doing HW and getting ready for bed, anyway?

That said, I like the racy photos. They're fun, different and all-in-all they are a very grown-up representation of GLEE. I can't speak for how parents should censor TV for their kids, but I'm loving all things GLEE. Racy, controversial photos included.

And how is this fashion-related, you might wonder? Um. The underwear is cute... and shoes with socks is a big F/W 2010 trend...

I recently went to, gasp, Payless to get some cheap black flats. I was pleasantly surprised to find some really great shoes and the BOGO sale was happening, to boot. I ended up purchasing a pair of hounds-tooth black flats AND a pair of gray slingback heels.

I'm still a little concerned about wearing heels from Payless and how long they might last. We'll have to wait and see on that one, but I'm pretty sure that the flats are going to work out just fine...

"... you look like a present"

Hello all! Today is a great day because I got to (finally) wear this green dress that I have been saving for precisely the right moment.

What's so special about today that I gave in and wore my dress? It's my ~~36th~~ 20th birthday!

I feel really old. Twenty is just a whole lot older than 19 in my eyes. I am no longer a teenager! I'm in my twenties! I feel such conflict about this.

Alas, I am what I am. Today I am twenty. And because I am twenty I wanted to wear this very cute lacey, figure skatery dress with a sweet bow belt!

Don't you always feel some obligation to dress up on your birthday? I do. I didn't even make excuses for myself like I usually do when all my friends are in sweatpants (like normal college students) and I'm dressed up like a weirdo. I went with the "it's my birthday" excuse.

In a recent episode of Mad Men (if you follow Mad Men), Rodger commented to Joan that he liked one of her red dresses because the bow on the back made her look like a present. I thought of that today when I picked out my bright pink bow belt. I thought it appropriate. It's my birthday, when else should one attempt to look like a present?

I really must love this dress. I took these detail shots and frankly it looks good from every angle.

Also, it looks vastly different around the waist and on the skirt, than it does on the arm and chest. Skin shows sometimes, then it doesn't. The peek-a-boo effect is really nice. I am so into lace because of this dress!

Anyway, so sorry for the self-indulgent post, but I'm glad I got to document this birthday and this outfit. They've been the best so far!

Signature

Do you have a signature piece? Something that you wear everyday or as often as possible. Something you love. Something you feel incomplete without.

For me, that piece is this necklace.

It's a teeny, tiny opal pinky ring with a leaf on it's side on a silver chain. It's one of the only pieces of silver jewelry that I have. (I infinitely prefer gold.) It's just very charming on a chain for some reason, but, of course, it didn't start out that way.

I'll admit that when my grandma gave it to me as a gift, she expected it to fit my thin fingers. And naturally my pinky was too fat for this ring! Embarrassing? Yes. Discouraged? No.

It holds great sentimental value for me because it wasn't an occasion or a holiday, my grandma just thought I should have it.

In that respect, I think this ring and I were meant for each other. So even though it refuses to slide down my (apparently chubby) pinky finger, I decided to give it another home on a chain and another life as a necklace.

I wear it pretty much everyday and I feel almost naked without it.

Night and Day

I'm very much into this olive green, full skirt. I wore it a few times this summer and it's transitioned into fall really well, so far.

Chelsea and Violet shirt, belt from Banana Republic, Forever 21 skirt, Kenneth Cole Reaction pumps.

Women's magazines are always going on about day to night pieces. I never gave the idea of one piece transitioning from day to night much thought. Until I achieved it.

I took outfit pictures that morning and I never took off this skirt, even though I totally changed my outfit for going out later that night. I threw on some more make-up, a dark top and jacket, and some leopard pumps. And voila! A evening appropriate look!

It's easier than the magazines make it seem. (Women's magazine do complicate everything, don't they? Especially about what men think... Awful, but I listen to them religiously.) 6 New Things

Hey all!

I was fortunate to get to Brooklyn yesterday to do some thrifting. We went to Beacon's Closet and I really liked it. I'd heard so much about it and was anticipating great things. My finds were beyond great. I'm so excited to share!

We also stopped at Forever 21 and Buffalo Exchange. It was a really great day for shopping and I didn't spend an arm and a leg. (Thank goodness!)

Here are my new things:

1. Oscar de la Renta Scarf from Beacon's Closet

The pattern on this scarf struck me and when I picked it up I knew that I wanted it. Then I saw the de la Renta signature and snagged it! Did I mention it was $10? A little much for a scarf, but it's gorgeous and OdlR! So worth it!

2. F21 Hair Bows

A perfect fusion of my love for leopard and sweetness. Also, really cheap. This purchase was a no brainer.

3. Gap Camel Coat from Buffalo Exchange

I've been planning on buying another winter coat. I have about four, but I get so bored of the same rotation. It's always good to add a new one to the mix. I was anticipating buying one for about $100-200, but this coat found me, instead. It's a size big, but it fit pretty well, the color is on trend, it's a great length, and seems very warm. Also, it was a great deal at $22.

And it has a hood! It's like the unicorn of coats!

4. By Corpus for Urban Outfitters Skirt from Beacon's Closet

Definitely one of the best things about thrift shopping is when you see something you passed on buying that's now in front of you, in your size, and marked 75% off of the price you would have paid. (One of the worst is seeing something you bought months ago in another store, in your size, marked off 75% of what you paid for it.) The first scenario is exactly the case with this skirt from Urban. Total luck!

I've had the second scenario happen to me, too. Ouch!

5. F21 Necklace

I bought this because I just needed some cute, cheap jewelry. It totally does the trick.

6. Marc Jacobs sweater from Beacon's Closet

I'm so excited about this buy! It was $21 and it's my first Marc Jacobs piece. (I have a few Marc by Marc Jacobs things, but no Marc Jacobs (period).) And of course it photographed badly!

It's a vibrant red--exactly what my closet needed-- and the bow is bright purple velvet. It has a cute pleat in the back and I love the bow! It was also a size too big and a little lose in the arms, but I could never walk away from such a great find! I can SO work with this sweater.

I'm excited to get some outfits in the works now!

Rainy Day Woman

I have been waiting for it to rain. Not drizzle. Rain. Like umbrella, raincoat, and wellies for days.

Why?

Because, like any lady who's interested in fashion, I already had an outfit planned. An outfit that I saved precisely for a rainy day.

It's exactly how I planned it! Down to the socks. I'm actually in it, as I write this and I still can't wait to head back outside and splash around!

I have some big plans for this skirt, too. Rachel Berry, anyone?

I'm wearing a J Crew tissue tee, a plaid skirt from Target, Hunter rainboots, socks from Target, and a belt from somewhere that I can't recall at this moment.

Unfortunately, I'm hearing that it's going to rain until Saturday. I guess that's what I get for wishing for rain. Plenty more outfits with rainboots to come, I guess!

True Love

I've been giving this some thought. I'm always buying something new. Clothes, I mean. But I wonder why we--women, I mean-- are always in the pursuit of something new?

I get that it's exciting to have a new piece of clothing and the joy we all get when we're still pondering just how to wear it. But so often I find that after a few wears a piece will loose its luster and I'm stalking a new piece to fill its void.

It's a vicious and expensive cycle. I'm not sure why we do it. I suppose we just love falling in love with clothes and the idea of newness.

But as I decided to post this outfit, I tried to include pieces that I still get excited about wearing. It turns out that I have many in my closet, which is a really good thing.

I still get really amped whenever I wear all of the pieces I'm wearing here. The skirt from Conway is about six months old, the blouse from Gap is more than 3 years old, my shoes are over a year old. All together, I really like everything I have on. And most importantly, I'm always excited about how to style these things.

I'm even still loving this trench that I bought last year and wear at least twice a week. I guess it's proof that we may all search for excitement, but true love really does last.

I'd love to see the pieces you've owned for a long time, but still love. Or maybe outfits that you've styled years ago and still rock today.

FNO or Bust?

How is everyone? School and my social life are kicking my butt right now! It's actually been pretty difficult to get back into the swing of things.

Unfortunately, I don't have all day and night to do outfit photos and write posts, but I get them done when I can. Whether it's outfits at 11:15 AM and posts at 2:30 AM, I do try to get to my blogging.

Speaking of butt kicking. Fashion's Night Out also kicked my butt! I didn't go last year, but I wanted to. I was actually pretty disappointed. But I stepped up and went this year.

The jist of FNO is that many NYC (and other big city) stores stay open late and have special products you can buy. Celebs also go to all the stores, they have special appearances by singers, and some stores have paparazzi platforms and other exciting features.

That's all "in theory." In reality, however, the whole concept is kind of scattered. Some stores are open late and most of us can't really afford to buy anything from those stores. Though, it is fun to look around. Also, if you want to see a celebrity, they're easy to miss. (Mostly because they don't stick around for long.)

I also didn't really know where anything happening was, well, happening. We bumbled around the lower west side for a while and then we decided to go shop. My friends and I brainstormed stores where we could actually afford to buy something. And something (relatively) cheap, to boot.

Enter: Marc Jacobs!

Specifically:

We saw one celebrity (the dad from Gossip Girl) outside of Cynthia Rowley (I think...). I wasn't too excited, but we did get to go to Marc's new bookshop: Book Marc! Freshly stocked with books about, of course, fashion.

Marc by Marc was full of affordable bracelets, key chains, and scarfs. It was also extremely crowded, but my friends and I were all able to score Marc by Marc Jacobs t-shirts. For the exceeding low (and at the same time, kind of high) price of $18.

Here's mine.

I wore it with my yellow cords from Gap, a leopard print scarf, and my leopard print heels from UO.

FNO was kind of a bust, but I'm loving my t-shirt.

I've Been...

...shopping. I've been back at school for about a week and I've already scored four new pieces! What can I say? This city inspires me to shop!

I've already shared my new school bag and Jcrew "Jackie" cardigan--if you're in the market for a nice cardigan, I would most definitely recommend it. I also wanted you guys to meet my new friends: gray dress and olive dress.

I'm hoping the gray dress will be appropriate for school "business casual" events. It's short, but I think it's pretty conservative up top... The olive green dress, however, is just for fun. I'm wearing it as I write this with capri leggings and flats and it looks very cute! I feel like it's a pretty versatile buy and hopefully will transition into winter.

How I hated olive green before! Now I love it! The olive dress is my fourth olive green purchase in two months. I guess people can change...

First Day Jitters

Hello, everyone! I hope your long weekend was fun and relaxing!

I've been back at school for just about a week and I've already forgotten what it feels like to be rested and relaxed. I guess that means summer has already worn off!

Like I said, I started school last week and I wanted to share my first day outfits. I decided it would be fun and would also make sense to have two "first day of class" outfits because I have the same set of classes two days each week (ex. Monday/Thursday and Tuesday/Friday classes).

Did I mention I only had two days of classes last week? It was a glorious short week!

Here are the outfits...

Like my new digs? I do! My new room is pretty spacious and in a good location on campus. I'm in love with my new building and room, if you can't tell from these pictures. I lived in a large triple last year and wanted to pull my hair out in frustration everyday! But that's in the past now, thanks God!

I'm wearing a Jcrew cardigan that my mom got me last week while she was here in NYC, an embellished American Eagle top, a tweed skirt from AE, and Mary Janes by Gianni Bini.

6 Ebay Finds

Hello everyone! I'm safely moved in and back in NYC. It's good to be back, even though it is terribly hot and humid out here. Now it's time to get serious and get back to school... and blogging!

Let's get right to the point of this post, shall we? I've had a short list of vintage trinkets I've been wanting for some time now. Over the summer I finally had the money and availability to participate and win some Ebay auctions.

And what do I have to show for it? 6 Ebay Finds!

1. Vintage Gloves:

I believe these were from Neiman Marcus originally (they came in their original bag). I wanted a bright color glove to wear with long sleeve dresses and shirts in the fall and winter. These are very prim and fifties with their scalloped edge. I was hoping to get these for less, but I thought under $15 was still a good buy!

2. Crest Brooch

I really labored to find a cute crest brooch after I saw one made of enamel in a vintage store a few months ago. I must say that I was really lusting after the one in the store, but I deemed $25 dollars for a pin far too expensive. Then I found this for under $10! I fell in love! Especially with the little dangling pearl and gold facing.

3. Vintage Sweater Clips

I am an old lady. Yeah, I'll admit it. The second I saw a sweater clipped with a sweater guard in a spread from Lucky that I raved about on a recent "Friday's Photo," I was sold.

I omitted a clip that looks just like the third one in this picture.

Unfortunately, I am a huge loser at Ebay auctions. I feel like I'm always at my computer or near my Blackberry, but the second I walk away from one of those devices I lose all my auctions. Suffice it to say I lost about four auctions before I bid on two lots of sweater clips. One lot had four clips, the other had two clips and three shoe clips.

By some magic I ended up winning both (YES!). I received in the mail six truly immaculate sweater clips! I always expect Ebay Vintage to have some wear, but seriously these clips came to me in brand new condition. Which is amazing because, like me, some of them are very old!

You can't really tell in these pictures, but the black cameo sweater clip is the most beautiful. It's shiny, new looking, and perfect!

And both lots were purchased for around $5-$7!

4. Vintage Shoe Clips

These accompanied the sweater clips in a lot. I wasn't really in the market for shoe clips, but I really like these. They definitely jazz up a plain pair of pumps.

As for the odd third clip, I may use it as a pin, pendant, or a hair clip (perhaps accompanied by a tall Breakfast at Tiffany's style do?).

5. Vintage Gold Belts

You've likely seen these on my blog before, but I still feel the immense victory of winning these gold belts from Ebay. Especially because one is Anne Klein (lion on top) and the other is Ferragamo (bottom).

I even have some new additions that I love!

6. Vintage Dress

I've already featured this dress on my blog, but I love it! I also won it on Ebay and it was, in fact, just about $15. All good reasons to feature it again, I think.

Last week I popped one of my favorite series into my DVD player and sat down to enjoy Pushing Daisies. I so miss this show!

I first read about it in the entertainment section of a newspaper at my grandparent's house (oddly I started watching Grey's Anatomy for the same reason). I remember the article well. It described a quirky, odd, whimsical show, about a pie making private investigator who could bring the dead back to life. Sounds weird, right? I thought so, too. I had to watch it just to investigate. Especially after the article mentioning murder victim's lives being counted up to minute they died (like Harold Hundin, a murdered polygamist, who was 37 years, 11 weeks, 5 days, 1 hour, and 2 minutes old when one of his four wives killed him.).

I watched the pilot, which was cutely titled the "Pie-let" episode, and have loved the show ever since. The main plot other than the PI thing is the love story revealed in the first episode. Ned the pie maker can bring the dead to life with one touch of his finger. When he discovers his childhood sweetheart, Chuck, is dead he doesn't hesitate to revive her. The catch is that a second touch from Ned would kill Chuck forever.

So begins an epic romance and fairytale story where the two lovers can never touch. Sounds good, right? Ned and Chuck keep the romance alive by kissing through plastic wrap and, in a particularity fantastical scene, they slow dance in beekeepers suits. I'm a sucker for this stuff! I'll spare you further details about this truly splendid love story/murder-mystery series.

My point of this post is (you knew there was a point, right?) that Chuck has very impeccable style. Costume designer Robert Blackman gave Chuck a very retro look. Her style seems to date from the forties in the early episodes to the seventies toward the end of the first season. It's one of the most stylish shows I've ever seen. I also love how the colors of the scenes and Chuck's clothes are really saturated and bright.

I digress (can you tell how much I love this show?). Here are 6 of My Favorite Looks from Pushing Daisies:

1. Incognito Dress and Hat

Isn't this a fantastic outfit? I love the big hat, matching dress, and sunglasses. I believe the shoes are in the same fabric, too!

2. Four Wives and a Funeral Dress

From the episode Bitches.

This dress was worn with a matching coat that was a little longer than the shift dress. Chuck wore this very cheery ensemble to a funeral.

3. Buzzzzzz Yellow Dress

This was a promotional shot for the show, but definitely something that Chuck would have worn onscreen for a murder investigation or a day working at The Pie Hole with Ned.

4. 'Urban Honey Pioneer' Dress

Ned gives Chuck her very own hives of bees to raise. Chuck wears a very pretty, full peach dress with white ballet flats and a prim cardigan sweater.

5. 'Down to My Silky Intimates'

From the episode Bzzzzz

This was the first outfit from the second season. Chuck's hives of bees were killed by pesticides, so she pours them on a nearly naked Ned to bring them back... Cute romper lingerie!

6. The Red Promo Dress

It took me about a week to finish this post. The research was a pleasure! I used the Pushing Daisies Wiki, which is very fun, and Imdb, of course!

A Mad Men World

I purchased this dress from Twitch Vintage (who's owner Robyn also has a blog and has been so kind to comment on my blog). It was very reasonable under $20 and I really love it. It has such a Mad Men 50/60s style feel to it! I also like that it looks like separates, but is actually one piece.

I paired this dress with leopard accents like these shoes and the scarf that I used as a sash around my waist. I was trying to do some retro posing and I even pulled out my red lipstick for this shoot! I still feel a little young for red lips, but I try the color out every once and while.

I know the 50/60s silhouette begs for pointy heels, but I've never been a fan of pointed toe shoes. Except for these leopard pumps from UO. They're definitely one of my favorite shoes that I own!

I've had so much luck with online vintage especially on Ebay and Etsy shops. What about you guys? What are some of your favorite online vintage shops?

6 Trends I (Probably) Won't Wear this Fall

It seems like a long time since we all outlined the trends from Fall/Winter 2010 Fashion week. It's pretty clear the trends that most people are loving and some that they won't be sporting come Fall.

Nearly every 6 list I've done so far has been "great" things, "best" buys, "favorite" this or that, so I thought it might be time to change gears. How about trends I'm not excited to see and wear? Or my least favorite fall trends?

Here are "6 Trends I (Probably) Won't Wear This Fall":
*I have to have add the probably in there because we all change our minds on some things...

1. Kitten Heels:

Missoni heels.

Kitten heels are okay. They look fine (aside from making ankles and legs look a bit fuller than tall heels would). That's sort of the reason that I'm not crazy about them. It's because they are JUST okay.

I've seen cute kitten heels and they are pretty practical. But if I'm buying shoes, I want to be excited. I'm not interested in practical, if the shoe isn't spectacular! They need to be must-haves! They have to thrill me! Kitten heels are just not thrilling.

I'd rather spend money on heels that make my legs look lithe and my frame a little taller!

2. Skinny Cargos:

J Brand “Houlihan” Cargo Skinny Pant

This is where the "probably" part of this list comes in. I don't care for the look of skinny cargos. The pockets seem to add volume on a part of the leg that need not be voluminous. At the same time, if I see these styled in a really fun, interesting way (I haven't, yet), I could change my tune.

3. Return to Boho:

I didn't get on the bohemian bandwagon when Sienna Miller (and the Olsen Twins) basically started it in 2005.

It just never appealed to me the way the more ladylike look has. Of course, trends are cyclical, so boho has been on its way back for some time.

I'm surprised that boho's first signs of return in years were accompanied a season largely focused on proper 1950s styles. As for going boho? I'll be sticking to my guns... and my full skirts!

4. Ankle Length Skirts:

As I've just said, I really love anything fifties style, but the authentic 1950s lengths shown on the Louis Vuitton runway don't suit me well at all. I'm relatively petite and honestly even heels don't help much by way of long skirts. I've seen girls look fab in ankle length full skirts, but they just aren't for me!

5. Shearling:

Shearling looks warm. It looks comfy. It's a seventies era style staple. It's even got a casual look about it.

It also reminds me of fleece and I'm not into fleece. Nor am I into shearling.

As for faux fur this fall, I'm looking for a faux fur vest and a faux fur leopard scarf.

6. Clogs:

Miu Miu clogs.

This is pretty controversial, but I am not a fan of clogs. Nope. Not at all. They're clunky, chunky, and not my style. Even the Miu Miu's above aren't making me swoon.

Celine clogs.

I've even seen them styled well and boy are some girls are really rocking the clogs! I guess some trends aren't for everyone.

Summer Simple

It's been an extremely hot summer. Say what you will about global warming, but I've always thought that it is WAY too hot here in NM. I won't banter on about climate change on my style blog. The only time I even ponder it is when it rains here, then I start to worry.

Everyone, including myself, is pretty excited for fall to come around. Unfortunately, fall in NYC is a little different. It's so rainy. As a native southwesterner, I hate rain. However, rain = rainboots and I do like rainboots! I have tons of outfits planned for my yellow wellies!

For now, I'm still trying to beat the heat in wedges and dresses. Like this outfit:

Dress: Target, Shoes: gift. Yup, my summer outfits are as simple as that. Two easy pieces. So simple.

I'll certainly be excited to get back to layering and creating interesting outfits for classes and internships, but I have a feeling that I'll start missing the NM dry heat and warm weather pretty quickly. Especially when it rains for days... and later when winter rolls around again!

I'm wondering, are you excited for fall and what will you miss about the summer?

Oh, my goodness! I have posted a lot in the past two days! For those who haven't stopped by in a few days will definitely have plenty to look over this weekend. Make sure to check out this post for a little mix and match inspiration!

Even though it's Friday the 13th, we're still having a Friday's Photo. (I was born on the 13th, so I'm not superstitious about this day or the number 13.)

I'm an avid Bravo watcher and I really love The Rachel Zoe Project. Rachel, her associate Brad, and her husband Roger are always experiencing some drama and are really fun to watch. You also can't beat the clothes (Chanel, de la Renta, Derek Lam, Valli!) and designers featured during the season.

I was also pretty excited to see Rachel in Harper's Bazaar in a shoot named after her signature saying, I die!" It's a little kitch, but I like the idea.

6 Beauty Essentials

I thought of this "6 list" topic weeks ago. It seemed like a really easy list to compile. Until, that is, I attempted to do it.

I've never really considered myself a cosmetics fanatic. I like make-up. I wear it (almost) everyday. I know how to put it on. I thought I only had a few favorite products. It turns out that I have way more than six essential products!

Here's the short version:

1. Lancome skin care: Sensation Totale (discontinued), Aqua Fusion Lotion SPF 15, Creme Radiance Cleanser, and Tonique Clarte

My mom swears by pretty much all Lancome products. When I was twelve she brought me to the Lancome counter to get a skin care regimen going. I have combination skin and was given the products made for my skin type. The original set has since been discontinued and replaced with the set above.

I actually still think about the scents of the old products (they were heavenly) but these are lovely and they work just as well. They've also lasted a really long time, which is a plus because they aren't the cheapest products out there.

2. Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion:

My mom has said that this product didn't work on her, but I think she's lying! It's by far the best primer to make eyeshadow stay put without creases all day. I've tried quite a few products for greasy eyelids and creased eyeshadow and this just works!

3. Mac Fluidline in Waveline and Mac brush #208:

I love this eyeliner! It looks just like a liquid liner on, but it's way less tricky. You can smudge it, wing it, and rub it off, if you make a mistake. I use this brush to put in on top and bottom lashes.

I never wear black liner because it's just too harsh on my face, but I love this deep navy color as an alternative to black.

I took a close up of my eye make-up. I do a wing pretty much everyday. Made much simpler by this eyeliner and brush!

4. Gold Revlon eyelash curler:

I know that some women find eyelash curlers to be pretty scary. Once you get over putting a curler so close to your eyes, it can make your eyelashes look gorgeous and miles long! Who doesn't want that?

Mine has a spring and I'm pretty sure it is trying to imitate the Shu Uemura 24 karat gold plated eyelash curler. However, it's about $14 less and works great. Definitely a great drugstore item!

5. Mac Powder Blush in Joyous

I confess, I have about 20 blushes. I love blush! In every color, every texture, from every brand! I love it all!

A little stack of blushes...

But in my forays with blushes, this has been the only one to hold my attention (other than a beautiful pink discontinued by Chanel...). It's the blush where red, coral, pink, and gold meet and combine in perfect harmony. (I might be exaggerating here, but I'm obviously a big fan of this color.) Unfortunately, it doesn't photograph that well, but take my word for it!

Funny enough, I also have a thing for mascara, but that could be a whole different post!

6. Lipgloss- Chanel104, Sirop, and Lacome Berry Bold

I cheated! I picked three, but these are my all time favorite lipglosses! Berry Bold and Sirop look great on anyone. I love these light, bright, semi-sheer pinks!

Jazz it Up

I know the title may remind you of that jambalaya rice, but that wasn't my intention. Neither was bringing about memories of my newspaper teacher insisting we "jazz up" headlines for our school's paper. It was, however, meant to refer to a jazz concert I went to a week or so ago.

I'm still undecided whether jazz is really cool or too abstract for me to understand.

Nonetheless, I knew one of the band boys from high school. He graduated from NYU and the band was sort of a rock-jazz hybrid, so I thought I'd dress a little downtown for the occasion.

Of course, I was way too dressed up! I don't consider this outfit dressy at all, but all my friends at home are really casual. I thought the denim shirt would tone it down, but the skirt and shoes counteracted it's effect!

I'm wearing a denim Max Azria/Miley Cyrus shirt, a Gap v-neck tee, a black patent belt from an old dress, an F21 skirt, and leopard pumps from Urban.

I can't take a picture outside without these ladies getting involved!

In honor of Mad Men starting up again, I selected this very retro and dashing picture of Jon Hamm from December Vogue 2008. This is a really glamorous set of photos by Mario Testino. The other photos are set at the race track, but I really like this one in particular. Isn't Jon Hamm really handsome?

6 Purchases Under $6

I decided a few weeks ago do some weekly posts. You may have noticed my Friday's Photo posts and my lists of six, which come out mid-week. I'm trying to keep the six list weekly or, when I get really busy, biweekly.

This week? 6 Purchases under $6, which was very challenging. I tried to find an array of jewelry, beauty products, and clothes because it's almost worthless just to list cheap beauty products and one piece of jewelry. This was definitely a challenge! Here's what I came up with:

1. Leopard Bangle -- $4

I got this bangle at Buffalo Exchange a few weeks ago. I had been scouring Ebay for something similar and this found me. I couldn't beat the price, either!

2. Black/White Forever 21 Socks -- $5.40

These are ankle length and I'll be wearing them with my black and white saddle shoe/oxfords.

3. Denim Shirt -- $5 (on sale)

I got this on sale at Walmart. It's from the Miley Cyrus/Max Azria line. It ran pretty teeny, but the fit is really cute. (I'll post the outfit I wore this with later!)

I found the price tag, so I thought I'd include it. Five dollars, no joke!

4. NYC Nail Polish in Time Square Tangerine Creme -- $2(ish)

A hot orangey-red color is a summer must have. This looks more red on camera than it really is. It's a great (and cheap) bright orange.

5. Vintage Necklaces -- $4

I bought this lot of three just for the pearls, but I've actually gotten quite a bit of wear out of the others. I love that each one has its own character and they're very wearable. Definitely a great under $6 purchase!

6. Belts

I got most of these on sale or for free. The black belts came with other dresses (the thick one was from a childhood dress!). The gold was purchased on sale from Gap and (I think) the green was sale from Old Navy.

I love belts. I could do a whole post on them!

Completed Project

I finished one of the dresses I decided to make (featured in this post and this post). I'm excited to show these patterns come to life!

I paired my homemade dress, with a pearl and turquoise necklace, and blue gingham ankle strap wedges.

Does anyone else in the world love blue and yellow together as much as I do? But almost every time I wear this color combination out, I get a comment like, "I would have never put those colors together!" I'm never sure if that's a compliment or a criticism, but I don't care!

I was really trying to get the dress moving (it wasn't working). Then it got windy! It was a very low budget Marilyn Monroe moment. I think the shots are pretty funny!

These furry monsters are my dogs! They just had to get in every good shot I took, but I'm okay with it because they're too cute!

So how do you guys think the dress turned out?

Happy Friday! And here's your third dose of Friday's Photo.

I have an old copy of Vanity Fair lying around and every time I walk by it I see Grace Kelly's face staring back at me. I actually bought the issue just for the pictures of Princess Grace. I first saw her in the film High Society and I've been fascinated by her ever since. That's why this is my pick for Friday's Photo...

I did a few outfit shoots today featuring one of the dresses I made! I'm very excited to show you all!

Also I didn't do a list of six this week, but I'll get back to that next week. I just had so many ideas and I couldn't get any one of them all the way to fruition. So next Wednesday look forward to a list of six things purchased under $6. A toughie!

I'd also like to thank Laura from Buckle, Button, Zip for featuring my "6 Great Reads" post and my site on her blog!

It came at a great time. I think every blogger occasionally gets discouraged and wonders what blogging brings to the table. But a nice email, like Laura's, comes along or some lovely readers comment and it makes sense! Fashion blogging creates a community for people who love fashion and style and gives all of us a forum to be creative and show our style. There's no better reason to blog than that!

Stripe Skirt

I wore this probably a month ago for dinner with a friend. I wasn't loving how the photos turned out, but now they've grown on me. This skirt just gets me! I love it!

And I think it's a milestone. I believe it was my first NYC purchase on my own... It's from American Apparel.

I'm also wearing my favorite Gap v-neck tee (I'm obsessed. I have five in different colors and wear them all time!) shoes from Seychelles, and a crystal and pearl necklace, which was a gift from my mom.

I really love this necklace. It's so delicate looking and sweet. It's tiny, though, so it's not a huge focus of an outfit.

I hope your Tuesday is going well. I'm staying in tonight to watch Teen Mom. Are you tuning in to Teen Mom? It's the best birth control ever, in my opinion!

6 Fall Essentials

1. Candy Colored J Crew Sweaters -- Ranging in Price from $50 to $158

Doesn't J Crew have the best cardies? But they're so expensive! My goal is just to get a cashmere blend one at a reasonable price. I wear a lot of color all year round, so a bright color is a must!

I know when people say "I need" that it sounds silly. You don't need things like shoes or a bag, but I think I actually do need these shoes! I had a similar black and white pair, but the heel is beyond repair. I had to put them out to pasture, so now I need a replacement. I saw these black and white, wingtip, t-strap heels from Urban, which are pretty similar. Sold.

I also need brightly colored pumps in yellow or green. Yeah, I need them!

3. Rugby Ralph Lauren Oxford -- Preferably in pale purple or yellow

I plan on picking one of these up from Rugby on sale for (hopefully) about $30. I got my last oxford in a size up to get the "boyfriend" shirt vibe. I've steered clear from getting an actual menswear style shirt, (a no, no for petite girls, unless the shirt is worn as a dress) but going a size or two up works just as well for a relaxed vibe!

4. Brightly Colored Hooded Trench

It rains a lot in NYC. Actually it rains frequently in the north east, in general. It's pretty much just the southwest where it is absolutely dry as a bone. As a native southwesterner, I am no good with rain. I need a good umbrella and a serious trench (waterproof + a hood) to keep me dry! I found some decently stylish options. I think I might go for the blue one! It's moderately priced at $98, has a hood, and is a bright color!

5. Faux Fur Leopard Scarf

This is a must for winter. All I am picturing is my normal, bland winter coats + a cozy faux leopard scarf. I found a few examples here, but I'm going to turn to Ebay for this purchase.

6. School Bag

The new school year always begs for a new bag. I usually go for a tote, but I'm open to a messenger style this year.

I'll look at Target before I commit to anything. I've actually purchased two or three bags from Target for less than $20 that have lasted the whole year.

I did a few shoots to feature my embellished tee from H+M in the best way for the Teen Vogue contest on Chictopia. These next three photos are outtakes, but I thought that I would share them anyway...

Wearing: My H+M tee, a blazer from Walmart (from the Miley Cyrus and Max Azria line), an H+M scarf, jeggings from Loft, and shoes from Conway. You can't really see my bracelet, but that's from Forever 21 (isn't all great, cheap jewelry from F21?)

New Year, New Shades

I'll admit that I am pretty excited a new trend in sunglasses finally came along. Sure, we all flirted with aviators and other styles last year, but the frame with staying power was, of course, the Ray Ban Wayfarer.

I actually tribute the entire trend to none other than Sienna Miller in (I think...) 2008:

I remember seeing press photos of her and immediately loging on to the Forever 21 website to buy a pair of red imitation Wayfarers. The next few weeks every fashionable celeb and some people I knew had them. The red ones. So being the crafty thing that I am, I got some in a bone color.

The trend was non-ceasing. Even Twilight hunk Robert Pattinson wore them in the movie.

2008 AND 2009 came and went. Ray Bans abounded. And then I saw these...

...on the Prada F/W 2010 runways and I knew change was coming! Enter the Cateye!

I'm sure the Ray Ban trend hasn't seen its final days, but I was more than excited to see such a cool, glamorous, Mad Men-esque trend come about. Now the cateye is something I can get excited about!

A Better Blog?

I stumbled upon this IFB article about how this 31 day challenge blog and workbook can help to improve your blog. I'm definitely taking some of the tips!

Did you see the 6 Great Reads post I did? Well that's part of the "create a list post" challenge . I've also completed Day 4 by interlinking posts and Day 10 by cleaning up my side bar! I'm sure if you have a blog, that you've probably already completed Day 19 by responding to blog comments and Day 8 by commenting on a new blog (mine, perhaps?).

This is a great resource for bloggers. I hope that if you haven't seen it before, you'll contemplate a few of the Problogger tips... Also, a new 31 day challenge group for women bloggers is starting on July 19, if you're interested.

I couldn't hurt, right?

1.) Why do you blog?

I was always interested in reading fashion blogs, but I hadn't visited one that really captivated me until last year. I saw a spread in Vogue (July 2009) featuring Jane and Judy Aldridge of Sea of Shoes and Atlantis Home and visited their sites. I loved their photos and their styling. I caught the blog bug! Shortly after, I moved to NYC for school. I was feeling so inspired by the clothes and I was shopping more. My style was evolving and I needed a way to document it. Finally, after Christmas, I just decided to go for it and I've loved blogging and growing my site ever since!

2.) What do you blog about?

I blog about fashion, runway shows, trends, shopping, and my own personal style. I like to involve readers, ask questions, and do DIYS. My motto is to share what I'm doing, wearing, and eating (and sometimes watching...).

3.) What do you find to be the biggest reward you get from blogging?

I really love sharing opinions and connecting with others who like fashion and style as much as I do. I love the constant inspiration that comes from looking at other blog/sites and how I translate that inspiration into my own blog and style.

4.) How long have you been blogging?

About six months, but I've been really focused on it over the past three months...

5.) Let's hear the story behind your blog title! :)

I really wanted something sort of inspiring, magical (I know that sounds weird...) and interesting. I wanted to captivate a reader first with the title and then with my content. At the same time, I wanted to be clear that this is fashion/style blog. It took a few tries, but I love my blog title!

I Love Your Style

by Amanda Brooks

I've read this a few times but Amanda Brooks is definitely a style icon to me. She compiled some of the best photos, stories, and tips into her book. The book is more about defining a style, but I look to it for inspiration about my own style and its evolution. Oh, and the pictures! I love the pictures in here!

The Thoughtful Dresser: The Art of Adornment, the Pleasures of Shopping, and Why Clothes Matter by Linda Grant

This is a nonfiction book about how fashion and clothes really do matter and how they have an influence on culture and society. Definitely a fresh perspective on fashion! The book is preceded by a blog of the same name. Check that out here.

Backwards in High Heels: The Impossible Art of Being Female

by Tania Kindersley and Sarah Vine

This book houses a group of short stories about being a female. I love other perspectives on the odd, cruel, miserable, amazing, and always fabulous experience of being a woman. Who doesn't like to read a book and think, "Yeah, totally. That's me in a nutshell!"

If You Have to Cry, Go Outside: And Other Things Your Mother Never Told You by Kelly Cutrone and Meredith Bryan

I'm dying to read this book. If you've ever seen Kelly Cutrone on The Hills, The City, or Kell on Earth (her own show), you'll know why. She steals every show she's on and she is fantastic. Honest, brutal, talented, and she really knows what she's talking about, be it the fashion industry, PR, or life in general. She also has the "slap in the face" kind of honesty that I envy!

How to Win Friends and Influence People

by Dale Carnegie

My dean actually recommended this book. It's sort of known as a classic for any workplace scenario and for networking in general. I even think some lessons in this book will apply to blogging, so it seems relevant... And hopefully it will just instantly make me outgoing, a great public speaker, a leader, and help my blog. Probably not, but I'm reading it anyway...

The Teen Vogue Handbook

I'll also plan to re-read parts of this book. It really does have some valuable tips on working in many areas of the fashion industry. Personally, I stick to the chapters on being a magazine editor.

Birthday Cake and an Outfit

It was my sister's birthday on Tuesday, so I made her a birthday cake before heading out for dinner.

This is what I wore. I went pretty casual with this outfit and apparently I decided to wear a lot of grey...

The scarf is vintage. My top is from American Eagle (below is a detail shot). The teeny tiny denim skirt is BCBG and the shoes are from Conway in NYC. You can't really see my sun glasses but they're cateye glasses from Forever 21.

If you've ever read my blog, you'll recognize this scarf. I wear it pretty often because, though it's printed, it has the feel of a neutral. It seems to look good with everything. I tied it in a funny little bow.

The scarf has gold threads running through it (another reason I love this scarf), which went along nicely with the beading on my top.

Here's the cake I made. It's chocolate cake with almond icing. We're not an icing family so the icing isn't extremely sweet and it's really easy to make. I just whipped (literally) up some Dream Whip whipped cream and added Solo brand almond filing to taste.

YUM!

In case you were wondering, the flowers are fake, fake, fake. I made the arrangement. It's a pretty one, so I'm glad you guys could see it!

All that Glitters is Gold - A DIY

I did a post recently about a DIY blog and after collecting the supplies I decided to attempt one of the DIYs that I featured on my blog. The DIY was to make a pair of earrings out of rope and rhinestones. I've seen a few similarly nautical themed pieces of jewelry in stores, so I thought that I would save money and have fun making them. It was also pretty simple!

All you need is (shown clockwise): fishhook ear wires, 8mm cord hooks, rhinestone trim (about a half yard), and rope trim (I used a yard of a medium thickness gold rope).

On a side note: the cost of all the supply was about $12! The rhinestones made up $6 of the total.

All of the supply was found at my local hobby store.

Steps:

1. I made a few knots near the end of one side of the rope. I didn't want the earrings to be too large or dangly, so I only made a few knots. Be sure to allow space in between each knot, so that you can complete step 2.

2. Weave the rhinestones into the rope.

3. Then trim the rhinestones.

4. Super glue the ends of the rhinestones to the rope base.

5. Attach the cord end hooks to the ear wires.
6. Fit the ends of the rope into the hooks. Super glue them in and let them dry.

7. Pair the earrings with cool accessories and nautical themed top and prepare to get some complements on your handiwork!

I also made a bracelet with the same supply, but I added glue on clasps as bracelet connectors. I only wish the connectors were gold instead of silver!

Steps:
1. Cut the cord in half and double it around wrist (just to get a general measurement of how long it should be).
2. Twist the rhinestones around the cord.
3. Glue the cord and rhinestones together in four or five places, so that they will stay together.
4. I cut the cord into two strands, but left one of the cords longer so I could knot it in order to fasten it (this will cover the silver connectors). I glued the fasteners on the shorter cord ends to attach them. (See below) I'm sure there is a better way to do this, but my way served its purpose...

It looks rough here, but I left tape on the ends of the rope... Why? Another note: Each time you cut the rope you should put tape on the place you want to cut so that the rope doesn't fray!

The end result is definitely cute! I'm wearing these ASAP! I hope you'll try these DIYs! They're too easy! I hope the directions were easy enough to follow...

Project Part 2

After picking out some great patterns for my dressmaking extravaganza, I finally found fabric to make the dresses with!

We're making the DKNY pattern, which is quite complicated in it's construction, with a silky leopard fabric for the slip and a black chiffon for the dress.

They look beautiful together, don't they? These fabrics cost about $40 together.

As with any pattern, you cut the tissue pattern out, then place it on your fabric and pin it down. Then you cut the fabric along the pattern. Pretty easy, but also a little labor intensive! The sewing is definitely the hardest part!

See? Tons of pieces (big and small) to cut out!

We've been working on this dress all weekend! It's pretty simple with only about five pieces to construct. So we decided to make two dresses instead of one. I tried to identify colors that were missing from my closet, so I could pick fabrics in colors I didn't have an abundance of like yellow, pink, or orange.

Here are the fabrics we got for the two dresses. They were so cute that we had to get both! The fabrics and lining only cost about $30.

Here are the pieces all cut out. The dress, a pocket, a sash, and ties for the straps...

We're almost done making the dresses with the second pattern. I'll definitely post on the end product and the progress on the DKNY pattern soon!

One of the people I follow on Twitter recommended this blog called PS I made this for DIYers and I had to check it out! When I did, I found quite a few DIYs that I wanted to try. The best part? All of them are really simple, I have most of the supply in my house already, and sewing is probably the highest skill set required to do the PS DIYs!

Indecision

I'm indecisive. Not really when it comes to clothes. That must be the reason I love fashion so much. I get it. I can make quick decisions because I know what I like. And when I don't have the answers, my mom usually has a pretty reliable opinion.

This time I'm asking my readers: which way looks best?

I'll explain: I picked up this shirt from Walmart (can you believe it?) for $5 (can you believe that?). I'm not calling it "chambray." It's denim. Plain and simple. I paired with an American Eagle tweed skirt, a HandM embellished t-shirt, and Steve Madden booties.

I styled it three ways: with a scarf (it's vintage), on it's own, and tied around my waist. I'm submitting this photo to the Teen Vogue Chictopia contest (for fun!) and I'd like to know which way looks best.

I like all three pretty well, but what do you think?

Wallet Relief

Sewing projects aside, I'd like to show off some goodies I just bought!

This Target dress was a little expensive for Target (at just under $30). The dress is actually about four inches longer than this one, but I've already hemmed it. Can't wait to wear this one out! It came in olive green, but since olive/army green (I have such a hard time with that shade of green! I feel like it doesn't look good with anything!) are pretty trendy I went with a more classic khaki.

I finally found the "jeggings" I'd been wanting. These probably won't be worn until fall rolls around, but the fit is great and they are so comfy!

I found this dress on my way up to the register to buy the jeggings. It only came in petite sizes (I just so happen to be on the petite side) and it's not on the store's website, but I am so pleased that I found it! Such a cute wrap dress in a very summery color.

The jeggings and the dress are from Ann Taylor Loft. They had a sale for 40% off of sale! Some wallet relief--Thank goodness!

I also figured out how to add a search bar to the side panel. I always remember old posts from my favorite blogs and spend hours going through the archives to find them, so I thought I'd make it easier for any readers who care to search SD. Search away!

Project!

Me and my mom have gotten pretty good at picking out patterns and making clothes... (My mom is the expert and I'm just learning. Actually, I'm kind of bad at it...). Our summer project: Dresses.

One is going to be a house dress, something kind of casual and comfortable that I can still wear out for errands and dinner. The other will be a little nicer for going out, to class, etc. Hopefully both will transition well for an NYC fall/winter. I'm going to pick out fabrics later this week, but I wanted to give you all an idea of what I'm going to be doing. I'll continue to update on our progress, as well.

Here are the patterns, if you like doing DIYs or making clothes. They're both Vogue patterns:

Without the sash it's nice and loose and comfy. I want a comfortable gauzy cotton for this one. It needs to be light and flowy.

Must See

If you haven't seen Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg) you most definitely should. I won't give you a plot summary or spoil the ending, but it's the story of the ill fated romance between two teens (Geneviève and Guy).

Sounds like it could be interesting, right? But did I mention that the movie is sort of like an opera? Yup, that's right. Every word of dialogue is sung. Beautifully so. I'm a sucker for a musical, so it's obvious why I loved this movie.

But if that doesn't do it for you, maybe the film's bright scenes and candy colored wardrobe will. It's a stunning film to look at (has anyone seen Pushing Daisies? It's like that.) and the clothes are just lovely in late fifties, early sixties style.

I love this story. It's visually beautiful and the singing just adds to the movie's magic. The ending will break your heart (lost romance, a life that was never meant to be, what could have been... all that good stuff).

Also, I have to mention that the score in this film is FANTASTIC! Just another reason for you to see it! And if you have seen it, what did you think?

No Shoes? No Problem!

You know what I like? Not wearing shoes. Don't get me wrong. I mean, I love wearing fab shoes. However, sometimes after a long day it's nice just to bum around the house in a cute outfit sans shoes. Don't you agree?

So after a day out in a summery outfit, I decided to come home and do a post. But I didn't really like the shoes I was wearing and I was kind of OVER shoes all together. Here's my outfit minus the shoe portion! I hope you'll excuse my lack of footwear!

The dress is from H and M, the cardie from Banana Republic...

The belt is BR, too. Oh my goodness I love this belt! I actually love all of my BR belts. They can be pretty expensive, but are so worth it!
